Keratin in Panama: what it really does about the humidity

Living in Panama City with wavy or curly hair is a daily negotiation with the air. You style it in the morning, step outside, and twenty minutes later your hair has opened up. That is not a product failure. That is high relative humidity entering the hair fibre.

Why it happens

Hair is porous. When the air holds a lot of water, the fibre absorbs it, swells, and the cuticle lifts. That is frizz — not dirt, not neglect, just physics. In a city sitting at 80 to 90% humidity for much of the year, it happens every single day.

What keratin actually does

The treatment fills and seals the fibre and leaves a layer that water finds much harder to cross. The result is that your hair does not open up: it holds the shape you gave it.

Be careful with the word "straightening". A well-applied keratin does not leave you permanently poker-straight. It leaves your hair manageable: blow it straight and it stays straight; let it air-dry and the wave comes back — but defined, without the halo of frizz.

Anyone arriving expecting permanent straight hair leaves disappointed. Anyone arriving wanting their hair to stop fighting the climate leaves delighted. Same treatment.

How long it lasts

Three to five months, and it depends almost entirely on how you wash it:

• Sulphate-free shampoo, no exceptions. Sulphates strip the treatment — the single biggest cause of keratin that "didn't last".
• Careful with the pool. Chlorine shortens the treatment exactly as it shortens colour.
• Don't wash daily. Every wash takes a little with it.

Before you book

If your hair is bleached or heavily processed, say so. It does not rule the treatment out, but it changes the formulation and the timing, and fragile hair misjudged is hair that breaks.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is worth waiting or choosing a specific formulation. A two-minute conversation avoids a problem.
