Lash extensions: why they last six weeks for some people and two for others

Two clients leave on the same day, same work, same adhesive. One gets six weeks; the other gets a fortnight. The difference is almost never the product.

Your natural cycle runs the show

Every natural lash lives 45 to 90 days and then sheds on its own. You lose two to five natural lashes a day whether you have extensions or not — and when a natural lash goes, the extension attached to it goes too. That is not bad work. That is biology, and it is the entire reason infills exist.

If your lashes were applied when a lot of your naturals were near the end of their cycle, you will lose several in week one. It does not mean they "didn't take".

The first 24 hours decide a lot

The adhesive finishes curing after you leave. During that window:

• No water directly on the eyes.
• No steam — not an uncovered pot, not a sauna, not a very hot shower.
• No gym. Sweat is salt water and it works against you.

This matters more in Panama than most places, for the obvious reason that you sweat here doing nothing at all. If you can, book for a day when you are not heading straight out into the heat afterwards.

After the first day

Clean them. It sounds backwards, but dirty lashes shed sooner: the skin's natural oil dissolves adhesive, and make-up residue builds bacteria along the lash line. A dedicated lash cleanser every two or three days noticeably extends retention.

Avoid oil-based products around the eye — bi-phase removers, rich creams, some sunscreens.

And do not touch them. Running a finger over them, however gently, is the habit that pulls out more extensions than anything else.

Classic or volume

Classic is one extension per natural lash — it looks like your own lashes, better. Russian volume is several ultra-fine extensions fanned onto each natural lash: more density, more drama, and surprisingly lighter per fibre.

If it is your first set, classic is the right place to start. You can always go up; coming back down disappoints.
